Upgrading The Filter & Pump System For Your Above Ground Pool

Many inflatable pool starter kits come with a pump, filter and accessories and arrive packaged into one convenient box - with everything on hand, setting up your new small or medium sized pool is quick and easy.

However to reduce packaging, postage and storage costs for some of the bigger companies, it is often the case that the pump and filter provided are often on the smaller side. They may well do their job just fine to begin with but over time you may notice that your water is not as easy to keep clean as you hoped and you start to notice cloudy water or algae beginning to grow in your water.

You may find that you are having to run the pump and filter in excess of 12 hours a day to keep the water clean as well as increasing the regularity of checking your chlorine levels and making adjustments by adding more chemicals, algaecides and clarifiers to the water. So what is the solution?

Increase the Size of your Pump and Filter System

If your new above ground is a staple feature in your garden throughout the summer months and is used frequently, it would be beneficial to upgrade your pump and filter system. Here are some reasons why increasing the capacity of your pump and filter system will be beneficial:

Crystal Clear Water

Generally the small cartridge filters that come with above ground pool start kits only have a filter surface area of between 6 and 9 square feet. For optimum efficiency you should look for filter surface areas of over 20 square feet. You may also consider a small sand filter instead of a cartridge filter. Read our article How Do I Keep My Pool Clean for more information about the different types of filters that we have available at Splash & Relax here.

Better Energy Efficiency

With the rise in energy costs this year the thought of running your filter and pump 12+ hours a day is probably not very appealing. The water in your pool should run through your filter and pump at least twice in a 24 hour period - a larger capacity pump will complete this in just a few hours.

Less Vacuuming and Chemical Use

Do you feel like you’re always vacuuming or dredging the pool with a net? Smaller filters do not always come with a debris basket so removing the floating leaves and organic matter can almost become an impossible task. Take this into consideration when considering which filter to upgrade to.

Bestway Pool Vacuum

To begin with, you were probably checking your chlorine levels daily and not really noticing much difference. As the pool gets more use and is exposed to natural light you may find that you need to add more chlorine or start adding an algaecide or clarifier to assist the pump and filter system. With a larger more efficient set up, you can keep the water free of finer particles, reducing the amount of chemicals needed.

More Time To Enjoy Your Pool!

Smaller filters will need to work harder and will then require more maintenance and cleaning, potentially up to once a week, even with vacuuming and dredging with a net. A larger capacity set up will reduce this, leaving you with more free time to enjoy your pool!

What Size Filter Do I Need?

When considering which pump and filter system to upgrade to, follow these simple steps:

  1. Look at the labels on your pump and filter and make a note of the square footage.

  2. Make a note of the size, depth and water capacity of your pool.

  3. Have a look at our range of pumps and filters and be sure to read the detailed information for each to select the correct size.
