Where and When Are You Using Your Pool?

With a range of above ground pools in stock, you can choose between a pool that is great just for the summer months, or something more permanent that can be heated and maintained throughout the year. The beauty of most above ground pools is that they are portable, can be emptied easily, and moved when necessary. Here are a few other points to consider:

Sunlight

If you are not planning to add a heater to your pool, placing it in a sunny location will be beneficial, especially with a solar pool cover to trap heat when not in use. If you decide to use a Solar Heater for your pool, placement of your pool is important to accommodate this. Our next article talks more about the heating option for your new pool.

Placement

Having space around the pool is also important so that you can walk all the way around, and to ensure that the pool is not too close to vegetation and other garden furniture that could damage it. If you are considering a metal framed pool, extra space around it is useful for ensuring the frame is on a solid surface or blocks and so that you have space for a ladder for instance. A little extra space around the outside is necessary too if you would like a dome or cover system for your pool and also a consideration depending on your heating choice. You may want to also consider having the pool visible from the house for safety (to keep an eye on the kids) and close to the water and electricity source for pumps and heaters.

Drainage

Placement of your pool for drainage is also an important factor. Ideally, within reach of a drain or in the direction of a slope or an area that naturally drains well in your garden, – you do not want to flood the rest of your garden, or your neighbours if you need to empty your pool for any reason.  We stock a range of pool pumps and piping that can help you with draining your pool.

The Ground

A level, flat surface is necessary for your pool, free from tree roots and sharp objects. Most manufacturers recommend a concrete base in order to provide a stable and level surface. The use of sand, felt underlay or pool floor protectors will ensure that the liner does not come into contact  with grit or sharp objects that could damage it and increase the chance of experiencing a leak in your pool.

Some pools, in particular circular pools, can be erected directly onto compacted soil/earth. The primary concern is that any surface is flat and free of material that could damage the liner. If in doubt, contact a local builder for advice on soil conditions. Getting your pool level before filling with water will save you a lot of time in the long run, especially if your pool is being placed into its permanent position.

Most manufacturers state that “level” is classed as within 1 inch – 3 inches or more off is classed as unsafe. Please note, failure to set up the pool on a flat, level surface could result in the pool's collapse.

For framed pools, it is important to consider whether the frame will sink or move once you have added water – place on dry, well compacted level ground rather than wet or recently turned over earth. An above ground pool will hold thousands of litres of water, the weight and pressure of which means that you need to have the frame as level as possible before filling. This will prevent undue lean and stress on frame legs and joints and lower the risk of stress tears and stretching to the liner.

Placing blocks, pavers or boards under the legs and joints, ensuring that they are level to each other is good practice. Intex Pools, one of our suppliers, recommends using 2x6 or 2x12 pressure treated boards, rather than pavers under each leg and joint of their rectangular framed pools, ensuring that the boards are large enough to allow for the frame to move and spread as the pool is filled.
