The glass is first washed and decontaminated and then carefully broken to the appropriate particle shape and size. PGFM is a better filter media than sand because it biofouls less.

Suitable for use in all swimming pool sand filters.
PGFM is one of the highest quality refined glass filter medias on the market. It is produced by Dryden Aqua in their own factory in the UK in strict compliance with their ISO certified process. The glass is first washed and decontaminated and then carefully broken to the appropriate particle shape and size. Above all Dryden make sure no dangerous glass splinters can get into the filter material and that the organic load is below 400g per ton.
But PGFM is not AFM. PGFM does not undergo the patented activation process and it is manufactured from mixed glass - the white glass is not sorted out. Nevertheless, PGFM is a better filter media than sand because it biofouls less, but it is not bioresistant like AFM.
For sand filters (below 100cm/39in diameter), use 70% of PGFM grade 1 (0.3-1.0mm) and 30% of PGFM grade 2 (0.8-2.0mm).
